Sinaya Sustainable Seafood
Empower Filipinos to preserve oceans, improve Lubang Mindoro fishing livelihoods, and expand products to boost community income.
The Philippines is the Center of the Richest Marine Biodiversity in the World, yet many Filipinos struggle to access affordable, fresh, and sustainably caught seafood. Fishers, who are among the poorest in society, often go unrecognized for their contributions, largely due to the inefficiencies of the traditional seafood system.
A limited selection of seafood species in the market means Filipinos miss out on the ocean's full bounty. Logistical complexities often lead to a decline in quality and loss of authentic flavors before the seafood reaches the table. Moreover, many regional seafood delicacies and specialties remain unfamiliar to most people unless they have traveled to the specific regions where these dishes are traditionally enjoyed. This lack of awareness threatens the preservation of regional seafood cuisines for future generations.
Traditional processed seafood, along with the women who make up over 50% of local fishers and process it, is often undervalued. Lesser-known fish are frequently dismissed as trash and deemed unfit for consumption. Additionally, the growing problem of food waste in the fishing industry, which accounts for 30-40% of the total catch, further exacerbates these challenges.
